Sixes

Walking from the station to work
I see six ships waiting to enter harbour.
Six hulks crowded together,
massive as a rugby pack

I don’t like the number six,
I always feel I’ll have a bad day
if I see six ships waiting.

Then I remember the station announcement
I heard as I waited for my train,
that today there would be only six carriages,
technical difficulties, he explained.

And my alarm went off at six this morning
it was supposed to wake me at seven,
but yesterday the clocks went back.

And there were six sparrows squabbling
on the bird-table feeder for nuts,
but as long as I can write a sixth stanza
the day will be saved after all.
